5 Crepe Menu Questions for Lactose Intolerance

Crepe menus can look simple, but the short descriptions rarely explain every ingredient or preparation step. Whether you are ordering at a bakery counter, café, food truck, or through an app, these five questions can help you get a clearer picture before choosing.

1. What is in this specific crepe batter?

Start with the batter rather than the filling. Ask, “Does the batter for this exact crepe contain milk, cream, butter, buttermilk, whey, or another dairy ingredient?” A menu label such as buckwheat, savory, traditional, or gluten-free describes one aspect of a recipe, not its complete dairy content. Buckwheat does not guarantee a dairy-free batter. If the menu uses more than one batter, confirm which one will be used for your order. For more useful questions at the counter, see these bakery ordering questions.

2. What is used on the griddle?

The batter is only part of the preparation. Ask, “Do you grease the griddle with butter, clarified butter, oil, or something else?” Then ask whether the same surface and tools are used for other menu items. A staff member may be able to describe the usual process, but shared equipment can matter differently depending on whether you are managing lactose intolerance or a milk allergy. Those are distinct conditions, so communicate the one that applies to you.

3. Which ingredients are in the full filling?

Sweet and savory fillings can each have less-obvious dairy ingredients. A fruit crepe might include pastry cream, chocolate spread, or sweetened cheese. A mushroom or chicken crepe might include cream sauce, cheese, or butter-cooked vegetables. Try: “Could you check every part of the filling, including the spread, cheese, cooked vegetables, and any sauce?” Removing a filling does not change what is already in the batter.

4. How is the crepe finished?

Ask about everything added after cooking. Powdered sugar, fruit, sauce, glaze, ice cream, whipped topping, cheese, or a finishing drizzle may not appear in the main menu description. A direct script is: “Please leave off the whipped topping and finishing sauce. Are any other garnishes added before serving?” If you are ordering remotely, put the request in the order notes and use these takeout note tips to make it specific and easy to confirm.

5. Can you confirm the complete order?

Before paying or submitting the order, repeat the whole request: the chosen batter, griddle fat, filling, omitted toppings, and any substitutions. Say, “Can you confirm that this order uses the batter and preparation we discussed, with no whipped topping or finishing sauce?” For app orders, review modifiers and notes again when the confirmation appears.

Clear questions beat assumptions based on a crepe’s name. Recipes and kitchen practices can change, so check the complete order each time and choose another option when the answers are uncertain. For JolliMoo’s current product ingredients and directions, visit the product page.
